Dining - Coral Gables
The City Beautiful
Founded in the 1920s by George Merrick, the City of Coral Gables is his legacy a municipality with Mediterranean architecture and hints of Spanish and Italian influences, featuring splendid parks and fountains, notable entranceways, and grand streets. The City Beautiful, as Coral Gables is also known, is home to 175 multinationals, 26 consulates and trade offices, the University of Miami, and a number of fine art galleries. The City offers 22 parks, 33 public tennis courts, two public golf courses, and other recreation amenities such as the largest tropical botanical garden in the continental United States, a spring-fed grotto swimming pool made of native coral rock with underwater caves, bike paths, and walking trails. Today, Coral Gables boasts one of only three National Landmarks in Miami-Dade County: The Biltmore Hotel, designated in 1996, and has nine properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Coral Gables Merrick House, Venetian Pool, and Coral Gables City Hall. Keeping with the Mediterranean theme, the Gables uses the names of many Spanish cities and famous people and places as local street names. For example, Granada (Spain) is a street name used and also happens to be Coral Gables' sister city. Among the many popular streets is Ponce de Leon Boulevard, named after the first Spanish explorer to set foot in Florida, and Giralda Avenue, dubbed restaurant row, which has a one block radius of boutique eateries and fine dining establishments. "The Building of Coral Gables has not been a thing of the moment, but a wonderful monument that will as solidly endure as does the everlasting coral upon which it is founded." George Merrick, 1926 |
